Directions & Maps

We walk every month, usually on the first Saturday or Sunday of each month, we gather somewhere in San Diego County. Each walk is in a unique corner of San Diego county – sometimes north, sometimes south.

Meet-up is at 9AM unless otherwise noted.

Balboa Park, San Diego

To get to Balboa Park from the north, take either I-5 South or I-15 South. to the 163 South. From the east, take I-8 to the 163 South. Follow the signs for the entrance at Park Blvd.

From the south, follow I-5 north and exit at Park Blvd.

Drive along Park Blvd, following signs for the San Diego Zoo but turn left at Village Place which is one traffic light BEFORE the zoo parking lot. Park in the lot to your left by the enormous ficus tree. We’ll meet there for a walk through this diverse and historic park.

Batiquitos Lagoon, Carlsbad

Take Interstate 5 north to Carlsbad and Exit at Pointsettia, heading EAST. Turn RIGHT onto Batiquitos Drive, then turn RIGHT onto Gabbiano Lane. Park on the street at the lagoon entrance at the end of Gabbiano.

Blue Sky Preserve, Poway

From the I-15 Freeway, exit at Rancho Bernardo Road and head EAST. At the intersection of Pomerado Road, Rancho Bernardo Road becomes Espola Road. Continue ahead on Espola until the road bends to the right. At the curve, turn LEFT into the parking lot for the Preserve. If you reach Poway Lake Road, you’ve passed it. The preserve is approximately 4 miles from the I-15.

Our walk will take us along tree-covered dirt trails through one of North County’s finest ecological preserves.

Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad

I-5 North/South – Take the Palomar Airport Rd East exit from I-5. Go East about 5 miles to El Fuerte St. Turn Right onto El Fuerte St. Turn Right onto Gateway Rd. Take the 1st left onto Finnila Place (the Red Oven Pizza is on the left). Enter the 1st roundabout and take the 1st exit onto Town Garden Rd. Turn Left onto Nygaard St. Look for the Gazebo.

78 West – Go West to I-5. Take the I-5 South to Palomar Airport Rd. Follow the directions from I-5 North/South.

Carlsbad Beach & Downtown

Exit I-5 Freeway on Carlsbad Village Drive and go WEST. Continue through several traffic lights and you will come to State Street. Turn RIGHT. Park at the train station parking lot at State Street and Grand.

Discovery Lake – San Marcos

Discovery Lake is off Highway 78 between I-15 & I-5. Traveling on Highway 78 from either West or East, you will take the Twin Oaks Valley Rd exit. You will head South onto Twin Oaks Valley Rd. You will pass San Marcos University on the left and proceed to Craven Rd. Turn Right onto Craven Rd pass three street signals until you come to Foxhall St. Turn Left unto Foxhall St. and proceed up the hill to the Discovery Lake Parking Lot at the end of the road.

Escondido

Exit the I-15 Freeway at Valley Parkway. Take the Valley Parkway Eastbound exit. Continue one mile and go past Centre City Parkway to Broadway. Turn LEFT on Broadway to Grand Avenue. We will meet at the SOUTHEAST corner of Grand and Broadway in front of the Damon & Drapers storefront. There will be plenty of street parking and a parking lot is nearby.

Harbor Island, San Diego

Take the I-5 or 163 to downtown San Diego and proceed to N. Harbor Drive as if you were going to the airport. Across from Terminal 1, turn LEFT at the lights onto Harbor Island Drive. Proceed to the second set of lights and turn RIGHT. Continue along until you see a parking lot on your LEFT. The entrance is at the far end of the parking lot.
We will begin our walk there, going WEST to Tom Ham’s Restaurant and then turning and walking to the EAST end of the island (Reuben’s Restaurant) before returning to the parking lot. The walk is approximately 3 miles.

Lake Murray

Take Interstate 8 (EAST of the I-15 Freeway) to College Avenue. Exit and proceed NORTH on College Ave. At the lights at Del Cerro Blvd. you will see a Chevron Station on your right. Turn RIGHT onto Del Cerro Blvd. Just past the Chevron is a stop sign at Madra. Turn LEFT onto Madra.

Proceed along Madra as it winds up the hill and down the other side. As Madra crosses Park Ridge, it becomes Murray Park Drive. The park entrance is about half a mile further on your right.

Turn RIGHT into the Park and proceed to the end of the drive to the dirt parking lot near the ball fields. We will walk on the north side of the lake, which is less crowded than down by the picnic area and boat docks at the main entrance.

Liberty Station, Point Loma

You may wish to map directions from your home to Roosevelt and Cushing, 92106, which is near where we’ll meet.
  • If you’re travelling westbound on I-8, take the Rosecrans Street Exit.
  • If you’re travelling southbound on I-5, take the Rosecrans Street Exit. At Camino Del Rio W. turn RIGHT. This turns into Rosecrans.
  • If you’re travelling northbound on I-5 take exit to I-8 eastbound. Bear LEFT onto I-8 eastbound.  Do not take Morena Blvd Exit. Take first exit toward Taylor Street. At stop turn RIGHT onto Taylor Street. Follow Taylor Street in the most straight forward direction. When you cross Pacific Hwy. you will be on Rosecrans Street. At Sports Arena Blvd. keep left to stay on Rosecrans.
From this point, the route is the same. Follow Rosecrans Street for a mile or so. Just before you reach the new Trader Joe’s plaza, turn Left onto Roosevelt. Continue until the road ends at Cushing and turn Right. Make a left into the parking area.
This new walk will explore the recently redeveloped Liberty Station neighborhood. There are several places to enjoy a coffee following the walk.

Miramar Reservoir, San Diego

The reservoir is off the I-15 Freeway between Highway 56 (Ted Williams Pkwy) and Highway 52 (Miramar Marine Corps Air Station). Exit the I-15 at Mira Mesa Blvd and drive EAST.

At the traffic light at Scripps Ranch Blvd, turn RIGHT. At the second light,, turn LEFT onto Scripps Lake Rd. The entrance to the Reservoir is just ahead on your LEFT. Drive into the parking lot to the right as far as you can go to find a spot.

Mission Bay, San Diego

Take the I-5 Freeway to the Clairmont Drive exit which is two exits north of where the I-8 Freeway ends at the I-5 just north of San Diego. Go WEST off the freeway and where the off-ramp ends at Mission Bay Drive, you will see a visitors’ center directly in front of you. Turn LEFT and park next to the visitors’ center.

Oceanside Harbor

Take Interstate 5 into North County to Oceanside. Exit at Harbor Drive. Take Harbor Drive WEST to a stop sign and turn LEFT (to the right is an entrance into Camp Pendleton).

Go down a bit of a hill towards the harbor and veer right onto North Harbor Drive. Follow the road for 1 mile. Park in Lot #3 on your left which is the lot immediately before the parking area for the Jolly Roger restaurant.

We will walk back along the harbor past where you entered, past the restaurants and shops, out to the beach and back.

Rancho Santa Fe Village

You may wish to map directions from your home to La Granada and El Fuego 92067 or to the Roger Rowe School, Rancho Santa Fe 92067

If you are traveling either North bound or South bound you will take the Via De La Valle exit and go EAST for a couple of miles until you reach Via De Santa Fe. Turn left unto Via De Santa Fe. Continue on until you come to La Granada on your RIGHT. Turn slightly to the RIGHT onto La Granada and continue through the village until you see on your right a “Fire Station” sign the next street will be El Fuego. Turn LEFT onto El Fuego and the parking lot is on your immediate RIGHT where we will meet.

San Elijo Lagoon, Solana Beach

Take I-5 and exit at Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Go WEST on Lomas Santa Fe for about a mile and a half and then turn RIGHT at the lights at Rios Avenue. Continue to the trail head located at the end of Rios Avenue. Park on the street.
We will walk along the lagoon towards the I-5 and back.

Seaport Village, San Diego

These directions are to the Fish Market Restaurant parking lot which is adjacent to the USS Midway on Harbor Drive. From there we will walk along the harbor to Seaport Village.
Exit I-5 South at Exit 17, Front Street toward Civic Center Drive. Stay straight to go onto Front Street. Turn RIGHT onto Broadway, then turn LEFT onto N. Harbor Drive. The Fish Market Restaurant is on your RIGHT adjacent to the USS Midway.
Exit I-5 North at Exit 11A to Harbor Drive, towards Civic Center Drive. The Fish Market Restaurant will be on your LEFT.

Shelter Island, San Diego

We will meet in the Bali Hai parking lot.

If you are traveling westbound on I-8, take the Rosecrans Street Exit.

If you are traveling southbound on I-5, take the Rosecrans Street Exit. At Camino Del Rio W. turn Right. This turns into Rosecrans.

If you are traveling northbound on I-5 take exit to I-8 eastbound. Bear LEFT onto I-8 eastbound. Do not take Morena Blvd. Exit. Take first exit toward Taylor Street. At stop turn RIGHT onto Taylor Street. Follow Taylor Street in the most straight forward direction. When you cross Pacific Hwy. you will be on Rosecrans Street. At Sports Arena Blvd. keep left to stay on Rosecrans.

From this point the route is the same. Follow Rosecrans St. until you come to Shelter Island Dr. Turn left onto Shelter Island Dr. When you reach the circle-roundabout continue left and the Bali Hai Restaurant parking lot is on the right.

South Bay, Chula Vista Marina

Take Interstate 5 south of downtown San Diego. Go past the 54 Freeway and exit the I-5 at J Street. Go WEST. J Street turns into Marina Parkway. Follow it around to the right. Turn LEFT onto Sandpiper Way and then LEFT onto Bayside Parkway. Park on the RIGHT. We will walk along the bay to the left, to the pier and back through the park.

Sunset Park, Coronado

Coronado is accessed by SR 75 off the I-5 Freeway just south of downtown San Diego. If you are coming down the I-15 or along the I-8, take the 163 South to the I-5 South. SR 94 also ends at the I-5 just north of the 75 exit.

Take the 75 across the bridge onto Coronado. Once across, continue along 3rd Avenue until it ends at Alameda Blvd. Turn LEFT onto Alameda… do not enter the Naval base straight ahead. Continue on Alameda and once past 10th Street, turn RIGHT onto Marina Avenue. Then turn RIGHT onto Ocean Drive. There is a grassy area on the right at the end of the road. Park on the road there.

We will walk along Ocean Drive, behind the famous Hotel del Coronado then along Orange Avenue, the town’s main street, and then back to the beach through the quaint neighborhoods of Coronado.
